Morningside United Church is a community church in the Morningside neighbourhood of Edinburgh, Scotland. We are a thriving (and growing) congregation of people interested in participating in a diverse religious community in Edinburgh. Membership includes long-term residents and recent immigrants, families and singles, students, working and retired membership.
Morningside United is in the Reformed tradition. It is in membership of the United Reformed Church and the Church of Scotland and has close ecumenical associations with partner churches in our community.
We believe in an open congregation - we invite all who want to ask questions about the faith, or simply to belong to a family of loving Christian people to "come in and sit down". Inclusiveness is, we hope, for us not simply a word or a concept but just what we practise.

On Sunday 28th June we said farewell to Revd Frances Rosenau who has been Associate Minister at MUC for the last two years. She leaves now to seek a post in her home country - the USA. Frances is a minister of the Presbyterian Church there.
At the service, Frances preached and celebrated. John Smith led a time of valediction with prayer committing all ourselves into God's hands as we move forward - one in God although we will be separated by many miles.
At lunch in the hall, a large number of members gathered to hear speeches from John, Dr Jack Dyce - Principal of the College, and Frances herself. Presents were given from the congregation. The day ended with us singing "Will ye no come back again" and "Auld Lang Syne".

Eco-congregation and our journey towards it
Morningside United Church has a large and active group of members struggling to discover how we might be more faithful stewards of Creation. As part of this we are investigating how we can become an Eco-congregation - one of the more than 200 congregations in Scotland who have already taken this step. The Church of Scotland decided at its General Assembly in May to : Instruct Presbyteries, in association with the Church and
Society Council, to produce a plan for each congregation in their
bounds, setting out how they will measure energy consumption in their
church buildings, ascertain their carbon footprint and achieve a
year-on-year reduction of 5% of their carbon footprint using the
Eco-Congregation Scotland carbon footprint module; and instruct the
Church and Society Council, in consultation with the General Trustees,
to report to the General Assembly of 2010 on the implementation of this
instruction. This is the strongest language the General Assembly ever uses - and as a congregation we have to prepare to respond! Read the Eco-congregation blog - click here Read the MUC Audit Report - click here

We had a wonderful Concert performed by the Garleton Singers (Director - Stephen Doughty) and Chick Lyall (Piano). "A taste of Scotland" brought together a number of contemporary interpretations of Scottish words and music - thoroughly enjoyed by the appreciative audience. This choir never fails to impress with its verve and skill!
Chris Lyall, as well as accompanying the choir, played an Improvisation on "Ca the Yowes" - reflective and thought-provoking. Chris Oliver, Olivia Giles, Stephen Doughty, Alexander McCall Smith and Chick Lyall We were delighted to welcome as a guest Alexander McCall Smith who had written the lyrics for one of the pieces performed. All the proceeds went to 500 miles - a charity begun by Olivia Giles which works with amputees and others in need of reconstructive treatment in Malawi and Zambia. Mr Christopher Oliver, FRCS, the surgeon who performed the traumatic surgery on Olivia during her illness, spoke on behalf of the charity. See the video

The KIRK SESSION has chosen the charity "500 miles" for our major fundraising focus in 2009. This charity was founded by local residents Olivia Giles and Jamie Andrew. They are both quadruple amputees - and the charity aims to bring prosthetic help to amputees, and to support other medical needs, in Zambia and Malawi.
